We all know that a clean house attracts far less pests than a dirty one. Creepy crawlies and rodents of all sorts like to hang out in all the dark and dusty corners of our homes, especially if there's a good supply of those crumbs that the vacuum cleaner keeps missing. Aside from creating a fresh start in preparation for summer, spring cleaning is a crucial process which will help you avoid pest infestations across the coming year.
Here are KCS’s four top tips to use along while spring cleaning to prevent pest infestations:
Declutter
All sorts of pests, mainly spiders, mice, and rats love to find shelter amongst clutter in homes. Get rid of unnecessary items that make for prime rodent real estate.
Remove tempting foods
Food not stored on airtight containers is a magnet for mice and ants. Go through your pantry as part of your spring clean and throw out the old and seal the rest.
Keep a lid on it
Make sure you have lids on any bins you are using for food waste. The smell of the scraps will attract rodents, ants, and flies. For bonus points, give the inside of your kitchen bins a good clean to remove any dried-up sauce, scraps and “mysterious bin juice”.
Seal points of entry
While you do your cleaning, inspect the walls, floors, screen doors and windows for potential places where pests can come into your home. If you find any, sealing them with some caulk or steel wool (for bigger entry points) will do the trick.
